The sea of red, white, and blue signs – and purple and orange and green and yellow—standing tall in yards throughout the county signifies one thing: Election time is upon us.
At the time of this writing, there are 10 days until Election Day.
And while much of this election season has seemingly been filled with lots of negativity, there are people working tirelessly to continue to bring positivity to the community. The O’Neill Center, for example, has opened our doors on a limited basis to welcome back good friends we have missed so much. It’s not exactly where we all wish we could be, but it’s where we are. We’re making it happen.
Our vital programs for seniors, including Transportation Services to medical appointments, Prescription Assistance, Adult Day Center, and Living Assistance/Homemaker are all open and accepting clients. Need help navigating Medicare Open Enrollment? Yep, we do that, too. These essential services would not be possible without the continued support of our community. The Washington County Senior Services Levy is crucial to maintaining these programs and helping our friends and neighbors who are 60 and older.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the year 2030 marks a potential milestone in United States population history. By 2030, all of the baby boomers will have reached age 65 and because of this demographic shift, national projections predict that older adults will outnumber children for the first time.
We are asking everyone in Washington County to vote FOR the levy you see on your ballot. This is not a new levy. It’s been in place for almost 20 years. This will not result in an increase of your taxes. It is simply a renewal so that we may continue to provide necessary services to our seniors for the next five years.
Marietta and Washington County have been my home for many years. I know how we come together in difficult times. I know how we celebrate our history and our people. The generosity of Washington Countians knows no bounds.
So don’t get overwhelmed by waves of negativity during this election. Look for the positive. Look for the helpers. Our seniors have given so much to us and they deserve our support. Please join me in voting FOR the Washington County Senior Services levy.
